Educational Background: I received my Bachelors Degree from University of Colorado in Psychology in 1994. I completed my Masters Counseling Psychology University of Colorado at Denver in 1997 and became licensed in 2000. During the years of my experience I have completed additional trainings in: Life Coaching, DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), (EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Therapy), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), ADHD workshops, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Therapy).

My Approach:

The counseling/coaching relationship provides a unique opportunity that allows you to focus on YOU… not on the outer world and all life’s chores, responsibilities, expectations and daily distractions. This is a safe place for introspection, analysis and evaluating personal progress. This sacred time is set aside for you to safely explore important areas of your life or current stressors. You can feel open to experience your emotions with gentleness, curiosity, and increasing self-awareness. As you more clearly identify your goals, values and hopes, you can set your intention on achieving your best self. This practice leads to living a more “value-driven life” rather than a life that is in response to daily stimuli and stressors. In this way you become more aligned with the truth of who we are.  Ultimately, it’s our relationship with ourselves that affects our relationships with others, and allows us to create a life that’s meaningful and fulfilling.

Present and past experiences have influenced your current emotions, thoughts and behaviors. As you begin to examine more mindfully the patterns of action (and inaction) you will begin to feel more empowered and confident to make shifts and gain a greater sense of control in your ability to move in a positive direction.

My therapeutic style is honest, direct, engaged, understanding, often challenging and highly collaborative. Genuine connection is of utmost importance to me. I will be an attentive listener while also looking for behavior patterns or thinking loops that may be holding you back. Often these “conditioned patterns” block growth.

Sometimes our barriers to happiness stem from feelings and deeply ingrained beliefs that are not necessarily true.  I like to help examine what “story” we may be telling ourselves or repeating over and over, with a new set of characters.

There is no single path towards expansion, change and healing. With that being said, I adjust my style and interventions to what works best for client’s individual needs.

THE BASIC BELIEF OF COACHING is that I believe you inherently know what’s best sometimes it has just been clouded over.  My role is to be a “thinking partner” and help you to find those answers within.  We all have an inner wisdom and the sense to know when we are living as our highest and best self. You’ll learn practices to relax and slow down and reconnect with yourself so you can begin to hear what your mind and head is telling you. This change may be uncomfortable at times. Often it happens in small steps or in one area of focus at a time, yet the process is surprisingly simple. I look forward to connecting with you as we work together to facilitate your unique journey.

Leah is a certified facilitator of True Colors Personality Assessment. This is an easy to understand and easy to apply inventory based on Myers Briggs. This process will help an individual gain a sense of his/her primary personality type and how he/she may approach communication, time management, projects, problem solving and conflict.  This insightful process will increase team productivity and satisfaction. Leah will assess each individual with an easy on-line link, then produce individual and team results. These valuable reports are personalized for each team member and bring greater awareness to the values and mindsets that drive behaviors.  Leah will also facilitate an interactive group seminar which interprets the information while also facilitating group exercises that lead to greater insights and team cohesiveness. In addition: facilitated team conversations and 1:1 coaching is also available post seminar.

I am an experienced clinician in Boulder who works with a broad range of problems experienced by adults, young adults adolescents, families and couples. I bring 14 years of experience into my work from an array of settings including residential treatment programs, transitional living programs, outpatient clinics, drug treatment court, and private practice.

I utilize an approach, which combines humanistic principals, attachment theory, mindfulness tools, experiential exercises, addiction treatment, family systems theory, and emotionally focused couples therapy. I start with building a relationship with you that fosters trust, openness, and safety. I then tailor my approach to your unique needs to meet your goals and desires for treatment.

Educational Background: I received a bachelor of arts and a teaching certification in secondary social studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 2009, I completed a masters of arts in counseling psychology with a specialization in couples and family therapy from the University of Colorado at Denver. I have completed training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Satir transformational systemic therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and EMDR.

Specialty Treatment Areas: Martial issues, infidelity, premarital counseling, drug and alcohol abuse/addiction, family conflict, transitional and adjustment issues, depression, anxiety, oppositional defiance, trauma, EMDR, self harm, eating disorders, impulse control issues, mentoring.

My Practice:

Couples: I am trained in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT). EFT leads a couple to get right to the heart of the problems that keep relationships unsatisfying and disconnected. The goal is to help you create safety and security in your relationship so that deep connection and caring can grow from the practice of honesty and vulnerability. I will help a couple identify the negative cycle they get stuck in. Then I will lead the couple to develop new ways of interacting that will help manage conflict and move into the caring, loving, and connected relationship we all desire. EFT has been found to be successful with about 75% of couples.

Families: Working from a systemic view of change, I effort to help families increase their communication, connection, and harmony within their relationships and their homes. We can become entrenched in unhealthy and unproductive patterns. I will help each family member develop awareness around their part in these patterns and develop new ways of being within the system thus rekindling a positivity and synchronicity in the family.

Individuals: I work with adolescents, young adults, and adults.   I have a passion for working with adolescents and young adults. The adolescent years can be difficult to navigate through and young adults have the struggle of individuating from their parents. I will guide adolescents and young adults through this difficult time—helping them develop more emotional awareness, coping skills, and realizing their individuality and resiliency.   I also work with adults clients presenting with depression, anxiety, impulse control issues, and trauma. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and use it often with individual clients.

Working with drug and alcohol abuse or dependence: I have years of experience working with addiction issues. I work from a biopsychosocial model of addiction, helping the client develop understanding of the underlying aspects of their use and how their use could be maladaptive way to cope with uncomfortable feelings.
