How I Work:

Focusing on the individual and their unique capability toward healing is the guiding approach I take in therapy. I work with great curiosity to explore the distractions and negative cycles that may be keeping you stuck. The struggle for clarity is a difficult one to navigate in isolation; together we can look at patterns and behaviors that no longer service you and gently work toward a new, more expansive pathway. The therapeutic process is one of finding balance between the emotional and rational, the mind, body and spirit then bringing that forward into our lives. Bringing meaning and integration to mind, body and spirit is the philosophy I hold in the practice of therapy.

Individual Holistic Psychotherapy:

It seems to me that in order for real change and healing to occur, the mind, body, spirit and brain must all be incorporated into the therapeutic process. Each of our stories is unique and there is no “one-size-fits-all” treatment.         

            Together we can work on:

  • Identifying triggers that put you into a survival state (fight/flight/freeze/collapse), which can contribute to self-defeating patterns.
  • Exploring your relationship to your family of origin.
  • Learning your attachment style and revitalizing your relationships.
  • Developing compassion for all parts of yourself.
  • Creating resources to help calm your nervous system.
  • Loosening the grip of chronic self-judgment.
  • Healing addictive and reactive patterns.
  • Building mindfulness techniques to help you feel more grounded and present. 

Family Work:

Families can benefit from therapy when they experience any stressful  event that may strain family relationships, such as financial hardship, divorce,  or the death of a loved one. In addition, it can be effective in  treating mental health concerns that impact the family as a whole, such  as depression, substance abuse, chronic illness, and food issues, or everyday concerns, like communication problems, interpersonal conflict, or behavioral problems in children and adolescents.

I work with families in an Emotionally-Focused framework, based on the work of Sue Johnson. This approach works from an attachment-based lens to help understand problematic cycles that trigger and maintain issues in the family. It then works to build interactions that that establish safer connection and a calmer, more regulated atmosphere among individuals and in the family system.

            Together we can work on:

  • Building skills for more emotional regulation and a better sense of feeling grounded.
  • Dismantling reactive negative cycles by establishing a more secure base of attachment.
  • Studying the blocks that arise in connection and support.
  • Creating an alliance through effective communication, emotional safety and bonding.

 

Trauma Informed Therapy/ Sensorimotor Psychotherapy:

Dr. Gabor Mate defines trauma as, “a psychic wound that hardens you psychologically that then interferes with your ability to grow and develop. It pains you and then you act out of the pain. It induces fear and then you are acting out of that fear. Trauma is not what happens to you, it’s what happens inside of you as a result of what happened to you.”

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SP) is a complete therapeutic modality  for trauma and attachment issues. SP welcomes the body as an integral  source of information which can guide resourcing and the accessing and  processing of challenging, traumatic, and developmental experience. SP  is a holistic approach that includes somatic, emotional, and cognitive  processing and integration.

SP enables clients to discover and change habitual physical and  psychological patterns that impede optimal functioning and well-being.  SP is helpful in working with dysregulated activation and other effects  of trauma, as well as the limiting belief systems of developmental  issues.

 SP helps clients cultivate their strengths, while providing enough  challenge to stimulate growth, long lasting change, and well-being.

            Together we can work on:

  • Validating your past hurts and traumas
  • Working though internalized feelings of shame and confusion
  • Identifying and understanding the everyday triggers that put you into a state of fight/flight/freeze/collapse.
  • Healing addictive and reactive patterns
  • Understanding how to process and release traumatic memories and emotions held in the body
  • Creating resources to calm the nervous system and help deal with trauma-related symptoms
  • Alleviating the suffering from emotions like fear, shame and anger

About Me:

Since graduating from Pacifica Graduate Institute in 2015, I have been cultivating my therapeutic practices in and out of agencies. I have worked in a transitional program for young adults, AIM House, going on 6 years. The program is structured to help guide young people on garnering enough ego strength to forge a path of independence, while also staying connected and building community. I also worked with their families in assisting with the individuation process through parent coaching and extensive family systems work through an attachment-focused lens. I have been in private practice for going on 7 years. My practice encompasses work with individuals, couples and families and has included a variety of age ranges. In meeting with such an array of unique individuals and tailoring to what they need along the way, I have deepened greatly into various aspects of psychology.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor working in Boulder, Colorado. I have over 7 years of experience in the mental health field. These experiences include: providing neurofeedback for individuals with addiction, PTSD, and ADD/ADHD at a substance abuse rehabilitation center, mentoring young adults in a day treatment program, working with adults in a home-based recovery program, teaching emotional regulation skills groups for teens and adults, and seeing individuals in private practice. 

I have a warm, gentle and intuitive approach. My work is founded on the belief that each human being has the inherent qualities that fully serve them in healing trauma, emotional dysregulation, and conflict. My work is also informed by modern neuroscience research, which shows that psychological change happens in relationship through present moment connection and awareness. I believe that therapy offers a unique opportunity to experience this type of connection in a way that provides lasting change. I start by building a safe, welcoming and trusting relationship with my clients. I utilize my training in a variety of modalities including: mindfulness, attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, EMDR and DBT to tailor an approach to meet each client’s unique needs. Educational Background: I received a Bachelors of Arts in Transpersonal Psychology from Naropa University in 2008. In 2016, I completed a Masters of Arts in Contemplative Psychotherapy at Naropa University. I have advanced training in EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), and Authentic Relating communication.

My Practice:

Individuals

Teens: Navigating the teen years is a complex and difficult road. Oftentimes, this period is characterized by challenging moods and behaviors. Some teens experience more extreme forms of dysregulation that include: impulsive behavior, self-harm, panic and phobias, OCD, and suicidal ideation/attempts. While it is commonly known that the majority of brain development occurs in early childhood, studies show that the most advanced parts of the brain don’t complete their development until adolescence is over. The teenager’s brain is undergoing massive amounts of change, growth, and re-organization of patterns that will influence the rest of their lives. I offer individual psychotherapy for teenagers, which provides a safe space to experience support as they navigate their worlds. Having an external space where your teen can express their emotions and thoughts outside of friends and parents can be a crucial part of their growth, safety, and development. 

Trauma: I specialize in working with individuals who have experienced trauma using EMDR therapy. EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. The net effect is that clients conclude EMDR therapy feeling empowered by the very experiences that once debased them. Clients find that their wounds have not just closed, they have transformed. 

Transition: We often seek therapy when we’re ready for change and part of our life has become unbalanced. A feeling of discontent, depression, or anxiety may have lasted a lifetime, or may have been initiated by a transitional change, such as loss of a relationship or career, or a yearning to grow beyond where we have been stuck. Working through transition involves many different emotions such as grief, anger, denial, confusion. The crux of what I do is help you integrate the various parts that make up your whole being; your emotional, mental, physical and spiritual selves. I use a variety of methods to help facilitate this process, validated by latest neuroscience research. By beginning to integrate the various aspects of your being, you will begin to trust your natural capacity to thrive.

Charlie is a Colorado Department of Education credentialed school psychologist who has maintained both a private practice and employment in the public school system for more than twenty years.

He is a past president of the Colorado Society of School Psychologists, has co-authored two professional journal articles on the Content of Undergraduate Transpersonal Psychology Courses and Reasons for not Reporting Peak Experiences. In addition, he was employed by the Institute of Behavioral Genetics to assess cognition for a long term study that focused on learning disabilities.

As a psycho-educational diagnostician, Charlie’s goal is to effectively integrate intellectual abilities, academic skills, and personality characteristics, in developing an effective treatment plan to address the client’s area(s) of concern. In addition, executive functioning abilities, as well as attention/inattention skills, are also evaluated. The assessment process enables the client to gain a comprehensive understanding of how these factors impact their educational performance, employment expectations, interpersonal relationships and their intrapersonal self perceptions or self esteem.

Clients can schedule a free telephone consultation to review their individual concerns and help to determine if psychometric assessment is warranted. If so, an initial intake meeting with a structured interview will be scheduled to help determine what specific tests are indicated, depending on the specific questions that the client wants answered. As noted above Charlie is trained to assess intelligence, attentional impairments, achievement, and to provide personality/emotional profiles.

Present and past experiences have influenced your current emotions, thoughts and behaviors. As you begin to examine more mindfully the patterns of action (and inaction) you will begin to feel more empowered and confident to make shifts and gain a greater sense of control in your ability to move in a positive direction.

My therapeutic style is honest, direct, engaged, understanding, often challenging and highly collaborative. Genuine connection is of utmost importance to me. I will be an attentive listener while also looking for behavior patterns or thinking loops that may be holding you back. Often these “conditioned patterns” block growth.

Sometimes our barriers to happiness stem from feelings and deeply ingrained beliefs that are not necessarily true.  I like to help examine what “story” we may be telling ourselves or repeating over and over, with a new set of characters.

There is no single path towards expansion, change and healing. With that being said, I adjust my style and interventions to what works best for client’s individual needs.

THE BASIC BELIEF OF COACHING is that I believe you inherently know what’s best sometimes it has just been clouded over.  My role is to be a “thinking partner” and help you to find those answers within.  We all have an inner wisdom and the sense to know when we are living as our highest and best self. Leah is a certified facilitator of True Colors Personality Assessment. This is an easy to understand and easy to apply inventory based on Myers Briggs. This process will help an individual gain a sense of his/her primary personality type and how he/she may approach communication, time management, projects, problem solving and conflict.  This insightful process will increase team productivity and satisfaction. Leah will assess each individual with an easy on-line link, then produce individual and team results. These valuable reports are personalized for each team member and bring greater awareness to the values and mindsets that drive behaviors.  Leah will also facilitate an interactive group seminar which interprets the information while also facilitating group exercises that lead to greater insights and team cohesiveness. In addition: facilitated team conversations and 1:1 coaching is also available post seminar.
